Effects Of Social Media On Mental Health - 1206 Words
In 1971 the first email was sent. This was the beginning of social media. Social media is a form of electronic communication through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other contents. Social media sites are like fads where people eventually stop using them and move on to the next one. This essay will be about the effects of social media on the mental health of the main users of social media. The age group that uses social media the most is 12-17 but the majority of people who use it all together are under the age of 30. 42% of adults online use social media and 97% of teens online use social media. Three in four teens access the internet on cell phones, tablets, and other mobile devices. Ironically, even though it is called social media, it actually causes a lot of people to become less connected with other people in real life. Steven Strogatz of Cornell University says ââ¬Å" social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between the meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media. By focusing so much of our time and psychic energy on these less meaningful relationships, our most important connections will weaken.â⬠What this means is that we spend a lot of our time and energy online trying to create relationships with people online that distracts from real life people and social situations. The History Boys Free Essays
ââ¬Å"The History Boysâ⬠is about eight boys of high academic abilities who are preparing to sit the Oxbridge entry exam. They are taught by two homosexual teachers, Hector and Irwin, who have total different teaching strategies. Hector is an older man with strong feelings towards poetry and has no particular teaching program and gropes his students and it seems that the boys donââ¬â¢t really enjoy it though at the end it shows that they are quite ok with that. We will write a custom essay sample on The History Boys or any similar topic only for you Order Now Irwin, a much younger man, is more sensible about teaching. He is the new teacher that has been taken in to teach the students about how to stand out between their competitors with getting into Oxford. There is quite some competition between both the teachers with Hector being older and Irwin being more attractive and being very close in age with the boys. ââ¬Å"He does, depressingly soâ⬠Hector seems very jealous and depressed at the fact that the new teacher Irwin is clever. This means that there is even more competition for Hector and that if he wants to impress the boys, he needs to work harder. Irwin is obviously younger and even more attractive than Hector which could make things even more complicated for Hector. Hector is clearly gay and gropes his students, but what the students do not know is that Irwin too is gay. Hector obviously has realised that the students donââ¬â¢t really mind him groping them as they are not objecting in any way. He could be scared that Irwin would do the same as he does and therefore because of his attractiveness the boys would like Irwin more than they like Hector. The fact that their teaching strategies are so different makes it even more interesting to compare the two together. At one point in the story, both teachers teach the boys at the same time. ââ¬Å"We donââ¬â¢t know who we are, sir. Your class or Mr. Irwinââ¬â¢s.â⬠At Irwinââ¬â¢s lessons, the boys are more serious, as Irwin has a programme. At Hectorââ¬â¢s lessons they are more thoughtful and they decide how to start the lessons. So when both teachers are teaching at the same time it gets a little difficult and they boys donââ¬â¢t really know how to behave. Mrs. Lintott is not very surprised at the fact that Irwin is intelligent. Read also History Quizzes ââ¬Å"The Catcher in the Rye is a 1951 novel by J. D. Salinger. Originally published for adults, the novel has become a common part of high school and college curricula throughout the English-speaking worldâ⬠7 Itââ¬â¢s quite strange that the book was originally published for adults and now is used widely in schools and colleges. ââ¬Å"Let each child thatââ¬â¢s in your care have as much neurosis as the child can bear.â⬠This is a section from Audenââ¬â¢s poem Letter to Lord Byron. He could be meaning that itââ¬â¢s no harm if you bring up your children in a hard way as it will be good as long as it does not go too far. So really, the books that are not liked by the children and yet are forced upon them wonââ¬â¢t harm them and it will be useful to them one day. In the next section of the play, Irwin and the boys are talking about the Second World War and the reasons for why it really happened. Irwin starts off and lets the boys come to a conclusion. ââ¬Å"Which, sir, since Wilfred Owen says men were dying like cattle, is the appropriate word.â⬠Hector finds it important that they know poems by heart as it will be understood by them one day, and that is what really happens here. They use their knowledge thatââ¬â¢s given over by Hector not just in English but in their other lessons meaning that learning these poems by heart really is useful. The poem describes how so many men were dying during the war that they looked like masses of animal. ââ¬Å"First Classâ⬠¦I am asleep.â⬠The fact that he is asleep is because he has read exactly the same story for 8 times and he had rather read something what would be outside peopleââ¬â¢s comfort zone. Especially when that essay can guarantee you a place in on of the top universities you need to think for yourself and try to stand out within the crowd, your competitors. ââ¬Å"What has that got to do with anything?â⬠Writing an essay on history should not per se be about the truth. History is truth as far as the writers are concerned and is usually written by those that were victorious (in a war for example). History is history for those who want to believe it is history from the victorious perspectives. If you read it from the perspective of the conquered you will hear another story and the other would be blamed. ââ¬Å"We still donââ¬â¢t like to admit the war was even partly our fault because so many of our people died. According to Irwin, the Second world lead to many people dying which is why people are sensitive about it but what they do not know is that there were people that actually enjoyed the war. According to him, and he is referring the poets, ââ¬Å"most of them seem to have enjoyed the war.â⬠13 Because of the war the poets had something to write about, thatââ¬â¢s where they got their inspiration from. If there was no war, they would not have been able to write such powerful poems without a lot of difficulty. When you have experienced something yourself it is much easier to write about it. Poems are the words of the poet and you can interpret it in any way you like yet you cannot exactly know what the poet meant with his words. ââ¬Å"In other wordsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Again, this is something they have learned in Hectorââ¬â¢s lessons. Irwin thinks the lessons of Hector are more fun than educational but this clearly says that they do learn things in his lesson. At schools teachers spoon-feed their students all the way through. When Rudge asks Irwin; ââ¬Å"What do I write down?â⬠15 Irwin responds with; ââ¬Å"I must not write down every word that teacher says.â⬠16 Irwin clearly wants them to think for themselves. Heââ¬â¢s happy to help them along and tell them what direction they need to go to, but at the end of the day, it has to be them that think it through and they should come to an own conclusion on their own. How to cite The History Boys, Papers The History Boys Free Essays In the play ââ¬ËThe History Boysââ¬â¢ Alan Bennett is known to utilize multiple styles and themes within his work. The play explores common problems among teenage boys, from achieving the needed grades become a student at Oxford to homosexuality. The boys are taught by three teachers who are called Hector, Irwin and Lintott who all employ contrasting teaching techniques. We will write a custom essay sample on The History Boys or any similar topic only for you Order Now Alan Bennett is known to add conflict between characters, in The History Boyââ¬â¢s case, this is mainly between Hector and Irwin ââ¬Å"Irwin: Itââ¬â¢s not the plays, itââ¬â¢s the acting of the plays, Shakespeare, anybody. Itââ¬â¢s no fun teaching the stage struck. Hector: And isnââ¬â¢t being stage struck a part of their education? â⬠this illustrates the fact that Irwin has no interest in drama and offends Hector with his minimal knowledge in the matter. You notice that Irwin is talking about a subject he is weak in, is because of the poor descriptive words he uses as he tries to justify his words, such as ââ¬Å"Anybodyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s no funâ⬠which has reason to offend Hector. Hector counters what Irwin claims with his line after Irwinââ¬â¢s, after this small conflict you are able to distinguish between Hector ability to speak truth and wishes that his students will benefit from his charisma in teaching with Irwinââ¬â¢s knowledge of whatââ¬â¢s needed in the students to have a solid chance to earn there place in Oxford, thus confliction between these two characters is formed. A second conflict is implemented into the play just after Irwin and Hectors first dispute, when this happens you can start to understand why Alan Bennett added a mock interview scene; to purposely cause confliction at a significant stage between these three teachers, the power struggle continues by the quote ââ¬Å"Hector: No, you should just say what you enjoy. Posner: Mozart. Irwin: No, no. Everyone likes Mozart. Somebody more off the beaten track, Tippett, say, or Bucknerâ⬠this quote holds a lot through its language, for instant, Hector is relaxed with his speech, as commas are placed in areas such as ââ¬Å"No, you should just sayâ⬠which means he is in no rush to push his views to the boys while Irwin is the complete opposite ââ¬Å"Somebody more off the beaten track, Tippett, say, or Bucknerâ⬠with the use of commas, it points out that Irwin is more desperate to get his points across in the situation, a metaphor is used here with the quote ââ¬Å"Off the eaten trackâ⬠. You sympathise more with Hector with this quote, because he is trying to teach his students the core of education and what it is worth to make them unique, while Irwin is smothering the boys with things that he knows the examiners would like to hear. You see where Irwin and Hector are coming from more clearly with this quote after there second dispute ââ¬Å"Hector: May I make a suggestion? Why can they not all just tell the truth? Irwin: Itââ¬â¢s worth trying, provided, of course, you can make it seem like youââ¬â¢re telling the truth? this quote emits one of Alan Bennettââ¬â¢s style of writing, when Hector says ââ¬Å"May I make a suggestion? â⬠this blatantly shows that a rhetorical question has been implemented, as Hector continues without Irwinââ¬â¢s permission, Alan Bennett is known commonly to use this in his past work such as ââ¬ËTalking Headsââ¬â¢. Irwin continues with the short spaced commas as well, remaining impatient and slightly worried, as the job that the Headmaster as promised him means a lot to his career, so in a sense, he is desperate. The next key moment is Mrs. Lintottââ¬â¢s speech on sexism, her reasons why are because Womanââ¬â¢s statusââ¬â¢ were still not balanced between menââ¬â¢s in the early 1980ââ¬â¢s which caused a problem in society. Alan Bennett uses another common style that he writes in, which is irony, this is placed into the fact that Mrs. Lintott is the only woman and also has the smallest role that appears in the play, and her largest speech is coincidently her talking about sexism ââ¬Å"Mrs. Lintott: Iââ¬â¢ll tell you why there are no woman historians on TV, itââ¬â¢s because they donââ¬â¢t get carried away for a start, and they donââ¬â¢t come bouncing up to you with every new historical notion theyââ¬â¢ve come up withâ⬠the speech is her general views of stereotypical men in the early 1980ââ¬â¢s but modified around the subject of history as stereotypical men in this era is made to look arrogant and boastful. ââ¬ËDowntrodden and Misfortunateââ¬â¢ is one typical theme the Alan Bennett associates within his characters, with Mrs.à Lintott and how she is put down because she is a woman; this also brings up the theme of ââ¬ËThe Role of Womenââ¬â¢, and Hector who is being forced out of the school where he teaches because of his sexuality which arises the theme or ââ¬ËHomosexualityââ¬â¢. There a symbolism that Mrs. Lintott does not fit into the conflict of Hector and Irwin well, mainly because she is a woman and that her views are about equality where Hectors and Irwinââ¬â¢s are merely opposites. This symbolises in a way that she is the diffuser between Hector and Irwin ââ¬Å"Mrs. Lintott: On a strictly non-gender-orientated basis, I just wonder whether it occurs to any of you how dispiriting it is. â⬠This quote supports this. The play, as a whole uses very little stage direction, this is accounted for as a style. His reasons for this in his own words were ââ¬Å"I have not included many stage directions or even noted changes of scene; the more fluid the action the betterâ⬠(Which was found in the book), this in a sense can be referred to it being written as a novel; this and the subject of sex, has been found to be used by Bennett in numerous books (Talking heads, The Lady In The Van). There can be negatives to little stage direction that Alan Bennett uses, where the direction of the play could be interpreted very differently that how Bennett wouldââ¬â¢ve liked. Thereââ¬â¢s reason Hector and Irwin conflict in this play, Alan Bennett focusââ¬â¢ on opposites with teaching devices, but goes more in-depth with this by using symbolisms, the characters may conflict, but Alan Bennett implies this in more than one way for them being opposites, for example; Hector is a larger character; the film in 2006 suggests this, and Irwin is thinner. Hector is older; Irwin is younger which you find out through the plays storyline. Hectors language is more florid and worth ââ¬Å"Oh, yes, a degree of presentationâ⬠while Irwinââ¬â¢s is more basic ââ¬Å"Otherwise they are likely to be the usual, ââ¬ËWhat are your hobbies? ââ¬â¢ type questionsâ⬠. Hector holds a traditional view while Irwin is more in the modern era. Hector understands the core value of education while Irwin preferably interested in marks and pleasing the headmaster. All these opposites show that they are naturally meant to conflict each other, thus polarizing arguments that are highlighted by Alan Bennett. In conclusion these four pages Alan Bennett useââ¬â¢s themes from ââ¬ËHomosexualityââ¬â¢ to ââ¬ËThe role of womenââ¬â¢ along with the styles of minimal use of stage direction, this is seen in the play as a whole because the play revolves around these issues from the beginning to the end of the play, this is seen with Posner falling for Dakin, Hector eventually being blackmailed into retirement and no conclusion or mention found to Mrs.à Lintottââ¬â¢s issue of sexism. Alan Bennett claimed ââ¬Å"Too much stage direction prevents the actions and events of the play flowâ⬠evidence of little stage description between scenes, allowing a director to interpret the play with much freedom. Andly Kwan #17 THE FIRE AGES ONE DAY One Saturday morning, I woke up and the phone was ringing. I answered the phone but nobody was there. It rang again but still no one was there until the eleventh time. On the eleventh time, I answered it. It was my cousin and he wanted me to go to his house. I even got to see a train, a Metro Link train! When we got there, we went in and I saw a diamond shaped gold. It had a red pearl on the center of it and it had my full name on it! On the diamond shape badge, it said summoner badge. My mom said I get to keep it since I found it. When we went to Old Navy, we shopped there and I saw something at the corner. It said my name on it and the shape matches my badges. I used my time stopper to stop time and put my badges in. I took my badges out and there it was a golden door. What Are the Benefits of Recycling Metal
What Are the Benefits of Recycling Metal The United States recycles 150 million metric tons of scrap materials annually, including 85 million tons of iron and steel, 5.5 million tons of aluminum, 1.8 million tons of copper, 2 million tons of stainless steel, 1.2 million tons of lead and 420,000 tons of zinc, according to the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI). Other metals such as chrome, brass, bronze, magnesium, and tin are recycled as well. What Are the Benefits of Recycling All That Metal? By definition, mining metal ores and refining them into usable metals is unsustainable; the amount of metals present on earth is fixed when considering (at least when considering any useful geological time scale). However, metals are easily recycled and reused, providing renewed opportunities for their use without having to mine and refine more of it. Thus, issues associated with mining like can be avoided, likeà acid mine drainage.à By recycling, we reduce the need to manage extensive and potential dangerous piles of mine tailings.à U.S. Exports Recycled Metal In 2008, the scrap recycling industry generated $86 billion and supported 85,000 jobs. The recycled materials that the industry processes into raw material feedstock every year are used for industrial manufacturing around the world. For example, 25% of the steel used in production car panels (doors, hood, etc.) is obtained from recycled materials. For copper, used in the home building industry for electric wires and plumbing pipes, that proportion surpasses 50%. Each year, the United States exports staggering amounts of scrap metals - called scrap commoditiesà -à contributing significantly to U.S. trade balances. For example, in 2012 the U.S. exported $3 billion worth of aluminum, $4 billion of copper, and $7.5 billion of iron and steel. Metal Recycling Saves Energy and Natural Resources Recycling scrap metal reduces the substantial amounts ofà greenhouse gas emissionsà produced during the various smelting and processing operations used when making metal from virgin ore. At the same time, the amount of energy used is also much smaller. Energyà savings using various recycled metals compared to virgin ore is up to: 92 percent for aluminum 90 percent for copper 56 percent for steel These savings are significant, especially when scaled up to large production capacities. Indeed, according to the U.S.Geological Survey, 60% of steel production comes directly from recycled iron and steel scrap. For copper, the proportion coming from recycled materials reaches 50%. Recycled copper is almost as valuable as new copper, making it a common target for scrap metal thieves. Metal recycling also conserves natural resources. Recycling one ton of steel conserves 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone. Water is also used in great quantities in the manufacturing of many metals. According to an industry source, through recycling steel the amount of energy conserved would be enough to power 18 million homes for an entire year.à Recycling a ton of aluminum conserves up to 8 tons of bauxite ore and 14-megawatt hours of electricity. That figure does not even account for shipping the bauxite from where it is mined, generally in South America.à The total amount of energy saved in 2012 by making aluminum from recycled material added up to 76 million megawatt hours of electricity.ââ¬â¹ Edited by Frederic Beaudry.

Word Choice Qualitative vs. Quantitative
Word Choice Qualitative vs. Quantitative Word Choice: Qualitative vs. Quantitative If youââ¬â¢re studying at college, youââ¬â¢ll hear the terms ââ¬Å"qualitativeâ⬠and ââ¬Å"quantitativeâ⬠used at some point. These describe two approaches to research, each of which is associated with different techniques and methods. Mixing up ââ¬Å"qualitativeâ⬠and ââ¬Å"quantitativeâ⬠can, therefore, detract from the clarity of your written work. As such, knowing how to use these words correctly is essential. Qualitative (Related to Quality) One sense of the term ââ¬Å"qualityâ⬠is ââ¬Å"a distinctive characteristic of something.â⬠As such, ââ¬Å"qualitativeâ⬠means ââ¬Å"related to the quality of something.â⬠In research, this means focusing on the subjective meaning or character of something. In the social sciences, for instance, researchers are often interested in peoples opinions or motivations. A paper in this field might therefore say: This research used a qualitative approach to assess intention to quit among teaching staff. Methods associated with qualitative research include interviews, direct observation, and case studies. Spying on your neighbors doesnt count as qualitative observation, by the way. Quantitative (Related to Quantity) At this point, you wonââ¬â¢t be surprised to find out that ââ¬Å"quantitativeâ⬠means ââ¬Å"related to quantity.â⬠In academic research, this involves working with numerical data (i.e., things that can be counted or analyzed statistically). Quantitative approaches are often associated with the sciences, but theyââ¬â¢re also used in everything from marketing research to anthropology (the key factor is using numbers): Population change was estimated using quantitative techniques. The methods used to gather quantitative data vary, though they range from using hi-tech measuring instruments to statistical analysis of survey data. Numbers! Numbers everywhere! Qualitative or Quantitative? ââ¬Å"Qualitativeâ⬠and ââ¬Å"quantitativeâ⬠look similar on paper, so itââ¬â¢s easy to mix them up. However, since they cover very different types of research, you must use the correct term when writing up a study, even if using a mixed-methods approach. The important thing is that qualitative research is concerned with subjective meanings (i.e., the quality of something), while quantitative research deals with numbers (i.e., the quantity of something). Remember: Qualitative = Related to subjective human understanding Quantitative = Related to numerical data and statistical analysis

The Future of bussniess - Research Paper Example Generally, the failure of policymakers and the feeble financial system initiated the depression. However some economists believed with Keynesââ¬â¢ principle in explaining the ââ¬Å"real causeâ⬠of the Great Depression -- capitalism (Rothbard, 2000). While capitalism may be to be blamed for the economic turmoil in the 1930s, the absence of enough evidence of the existence of capitalism in the modern economy absolves laissez-faire as the reason behind todayââ¬â¢s persistent recession (Paul, 2002). If the todayââ¬â¢s economy is indeed depressed, large corporations and small firms will be the first entities to crunch. With the decline of market stocks, investors would likely resell shares or worse, discontinue investments on any business undertaking. Businessmen will depend on government funding to shore up businesses. However when companies can no longer allot for debt servicing, they may undergo bankruptcy. Besides, easy money is not a guarantee since banks are also not recession-proof (Ewing, 2010). The weakening of the financial system would compromise productivity, and largely, labor force planning hence a massive unemployment. High rates of unemployment would result to decrease in demand as those who lost their jobs will cut costs of living. Furthermore, unemployment would result to homelessness, hunger, and/or other psychological and physical problems. To come out of the economic depression, companies should not rely greatly on debt. Aside from the fact that seeking aid from financial services likely incurs bad debt, it eliminates the susceptibility of banks during crises which is not the case. This would also increase independence as they will have to write off toxic assets and make better use of other assets (Ewing, 2010). Banks can no longer depend on low interest rates since this will only increase the dependence of corporations on them. Also, companies should not always resort to a

Environmental Science - Essay Example And even the general perception about them is that ââ¬Ëthey are less destructive than other stormsââ¬â¢. For this very reason so little is known about norââ¬â¢easters. Norââ¬â¢easters are said to have caused heavy snow falls in New England and the Middle Atlantic states. In recent years, the US coastal areas have also been hit by a series of norââ¬â¢easters. All this has led to more attention towards these storms. Researchers have found that apart from their origins in atmospheric disturbances and their cyclonic winds, hurricanes and norââ¬â¢easters bear little resemblance to each other. Hurricanes are warm-core systems and thus limited in height by the colder upper air, while norââ¬â¢easters are cold-core systems that do not lose intensity with height. Unlike hurricanes, norââ¬â¢easters do not necessarily form over the open ocean. Norââ¬â¢easters are supposed to require the support of the jet stream to form, so their prevalence is closely related to season al changes in the position and the strength of the jet. Correlation of data for the past 50 yrs suggest that the annual frequency of the strongest norââ¬â¢easter is positively correlated with southerly jet-stream position over the eastern US. Windââ¬â¢s speed, its duration and the distance are the three factors affecting the growth of waves. With an increase in any of these factors, the height of the storm surge increases. October to April is the primary norââ¬â¢easter season with February being the most active month. Some of the features of norââ¬â¢easters which can be summarized based on recent studies are; Because of their diffuse structure, they are difficult to characterize, categorize and predict. Having not able to establish a direct relationship between a norââ¬â¢easterââ¬â¢s wind speed and its destructive power has made the task of classification and comparison of these storms more difficult. Researchers assert that one possible cause for the
